‘PLACEDISPLACE explored new ways of devising and supporting each other creatively, despite the enforced separation from the people and places we know and love’.
Supported by Arts Council England Emergency Grant funding, Pirates of the Carabina spent spring & summer 2020 exploring new ways of training, devising, playing and creating collaboratively. Armed with whatever tech. we each had to hand, variable wifi and a few projectors, our cast of 6 artists from the worlds of circus, visual, music and built arts, tried out new things, tested old ones and shared in an experience of creating without pressure – challenging the constraints of lock-down.
PLACEDISPLACE is a circus performance-art project examining what it means to be an artist in isolation – denied the space, platform and people to devise new work but nevertheless compelled to do so.
How it Began:
Supported by Arts Council England Emergency Grant funding, we spent the months of June and July 2020 exploring new ways of training, devising, playing and creating collaboratively. Armed with whatever technology we each had to hand, variable wifi and a few projectors, 6 artists from the worlds of circus, music and visual arts (Shaena Brandel, Barnz Munn, Jack Rees, Annabel Munn, Eric McGill, and Alfie Horn) tried out new things, tested old ones and shared in an experience of creating without pressure – in spite of the constraints of lock-down.
Since then:
As an action-research project exploring the process of interdisciplinary and remote working, the insights gained since mid-2020 have developed into a framework for creative dialoguing, which POTC have sought to hone and practice as a matter of our every-day collaboration with others. The PDP journey has provided the company with the courage to reflect in and on our current and previous ways of working, and to interrogate the nature and morality of performance in a post-covid world. We are looking forward to presenting the outcomes of this (ongoing) research project in the form of a digital archive.
